This was as heartbreaking and difficult to read as it was beautiful. You’re a wonderful writer. Thank you for this.

wow, thank you, Richard! that’s incredibly kind of you to say.

i know it sometimes feels a little odd deep diving into so many painful and messy topics on a “food blog”. but it feels important to do so I’m grateful when people such as yourself take the time to process it (read) along with me.

I don't know about you, but I've always processed everything through food. It's what I love about your writing. Food is an incredible tool to help humanise those who have been de-humanised, because every single one of us eats. Thank you again.

Thank you for writing this--I used to work as a mitigation investigator, like your ex-husband, in Tennessee. The memories of my work have been extra heavy today as Tennessee executed Oscar Smith this morning, the first in five years. I've always been disturbed by the last meal tradition and the media obsession with it, this deeply human connection to a meal against the stark, theatrical inhumanity of an execution and all the indignity leading up to it. You did such a wonderful job putting your perspective into words as it connects to such an injustice

Wow. Your connection with so many parts of this story is so evident. And there is some real artistry to the structure of it. Our empathy creates space to reach out and taste with others and you have relayed so much flavor. Thank you for this!

A few days before the state murdered Marcellus Williams, my Facebook memories showed me an old picture of me holding up a sign for clemency for Troy Davis. Marcellus’s case felt extra heavy to me and that photo helped me understand why. Thirteen years and 4 days later, my body remembers the anger, pain, and disbelief of that wrongful murder, too.
